Resin & Flower

茶膏 · 花茶 — the tea of essence, depth, and the still pool

Pu'er resin is what remains after tea is reduced again and again, until only the dark, glossy essence is left — a single small piece holds the concentrated qi of many leaves. Flower teas, by contrast, are light as breath: petals that release their fragrance to hot water and disappear. Together they form the two ends of a single principle. In the five elements, resin belongs to Water — depth, stillness, and the kidney essence (精) — while flowers move with Wood and gently lift the spirit through Earth's warm center.

The Huangdi Neijing teaches that the Kidneys store jing — the original essence inherited at birth and the deepest reserve of vitality. From jing arises marrow, bone, the brilliance of the eyes, and the long arc of one's lifespan. Once spent, it is not easily replaced. Resin is among the few teas that work directly at this depth: a small piece dissolved in hot water nourishes the root, calms the spirit, and steadies the will. Flowers, lighter and brighter, lift stagnation from the upper body and bring a softness to the breath.

"The Kidney is the root of stored essence and the source of original qi. It holds the will (zhi) and rules the bones; its bloom is in the hair of the head. From the Kidney all the body's water and fire take their origin."

— Huangdi Neijing · Su Wen, Chapters 1 & 9 (黃帝內經 · 素問)

To drink resin is to honor the deep well — to take only what is needed, slowly, and to remember that the most concentrated medicines are the ones that ask for the least.
